Ellie Goulding Delivers a Night of Magic and Meaning in Oxford

On Friday, June 6, 2025, the historic New Theatre Oxford wasn't just a concert venue; it became a forum for change. As host to the United Nations Human Rights-supported Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Concert the evening was dedicated to raising awareness of the human rights impacts of the climate crisis, and superstar Ellie Goulding was the perfect artist to headline such a significant event.

The evening began not with music, but with words. A series of powerful talks set a thoughtful and urgent tone, reminding the audience of the evening's vital purpose. Following this, rising star Essence Martins took to the stage, accompanied by two backing singers and her acoustic guitar. Her soulful, intimate performance was the perfect musical introduction, setting a beautifully reflective and soulful mood for what was to come.

When Ellie Goulding appeared, it was clear this was to be a special performance. Billed as an acoustic set, the stage was richer than anticipated, featuring a pianist, a guitarist, two violinists, and three backing singers. This "acoustic-plus" arrangement allowed for a stunning reinterpretation of her extensive catalogue. Her crystal-clear, ethereal vocals were the undeniable star, soaring through the beautiful acoustics of the theatre with breathtaking clarity.

Global dance anthems, particularly her collaborations with Calvin Harris like I Need Your Love, Outside, and Miracle, were masterfully transformed. Stripped of their electronic production and rebuilt with lush strings and delicate piano, the songs took on a new, poignant beauty. Her own massive hits, including Anything Could Happen and Still Falling for You, felt even more intimate and powerful in this setting.

The setlist was thoughtfully curated, including a smooth, captivating cover of Miguel’s Sure Thing and a tender, respectful rendition of Neil Young’s Don't Let It Bring You Down. The evening culminated in two of her most beloved tracks: the sweeping romance of Love Me Like You Do and a rousing finale of Burn, which had the entire audience singing along in a moment of pure, unified joy.

This was a magical evening that perfectly balanced artistry with advocacy. Ellie Goulding delivered a flawless vocal performance, demonstrating the versatility of her music and her genuine passion for the cause. It was a powerful reminder that music, at its best, can both enchant and inspire.
