Shed Seven Deliver a Masterclass in Indie Rock at O2 Academy Oxford

On December 2, 2024, Shed Seven rolled into Oxford’s O2 Academy as part of their 30th Anniversary Tour, delivering a show that was as much a celebration of their enduring legacy as it was a showcase of their continued relevance. The evening was packed with nostalgia, energy, and a few surprises that reminded everyone why Shed Seven remain a cornerstone of British indie rock.

The band kicked off the night with “Room in My House,” immediately setting the tone with their signature melodic hooks and infectious energy. From the get-go, it was clear that this wasn’t just a trip down memory lane—Shed Seven were here to prove they’re as vital now as they’ve ever been. The addition of a small brass section added a rich, dynamic layer to their sound, particularly shining on tracks like “Speakeasy” and “High Hopes.”

One of the highlights of the night was the band’s acknowledgment of their recent success. Having released two albums in 2024, both of which soared to number one on the charts, the band was visibly chuffed. Their gratitude was palpable, and it translated into a performance that felt both triumphant and heartfelt. Frontman Rick Witter was in fine form, his vocals as strong and emotive as ever, and his stage presence effortlessly charismatic.

The setlist was a well-balanced mix of old favorites and new material, keeping long-time fans and new listeners equally engaged. “Devil in Your Shoes” and “Waiting for the Catch” showcased the band’s ability to evolve their sound while staying true to their roots. Meanwhile, classics like “Ocean Pie” and “Where Have You Been Tonight?” had the crowd singing along with unabashed enthusiasm.

In true Shed Seven fashion, the band made sure the night felt personal and inclusive. They gave out birthday shoutouts, adding a warm, communal vibe to the evening. A particularly charming moment came when they handed maracas to a young audience member—a gesture that perfectly encapsulated the band’s connection with their fans, old and new.

As the night progressed, the energy in the room only grew. “Going for Gold” and “Let’s Go Dancing” were met with raucous applause, the crowd feeding off the band’s infectious energy. The main set closed with “Getting Better,” a fitting anthem that left the audience buzzing.

But Shed Seven weren’t done yet. The encore kicked off with “Parallel Lines,” followed by the irresistible “Disco Down,” and culminating in the anthemic “Chasing Rainbows.” By the time the final notes rang out, the O2 Academy was a sea of smiling faces, the crowd basking in the glow of a night that perfectly captured the spirit of indie rock.

Shed Seven’s performance at O2 Academy Oxford was a testament to their enduring appeal and their ability to evolve while staying true to what made them great in the first place. It was a night of great music, heartfelt moments, and the kind of communal joy that only live music can bring. This was indie rock at its finest—timeless, energetic, and unapologetically fun.
